The Contemporary Art Forum is an annual platform of discussion about timely and pressing issues in contemporary art and education. This year’s forum explores ways in which contemporary theater, performance, and non-art practices are redefining the notion of spectatorship or audience. Additional topics will include the influence of pedagogical ideas in the construction of performative experiences, the relationship between author and a collaborating public, and other common concerns shared by the spheres of theater, performance art, and activism.

With artists Andrea Fraser and David Levine; RoseLee Goldberg, curator and Director of PERFORMA; Hannah Hurtzig, theater director, Berlin; Shannon Jackson, Chair and Professor, Department of Performance Studies and Theater, University of California, Berkeley; Charlie Todd, Director, Improv Everywhere, New York; Bill Wasik, Senior Editor, Harper's Magazine, and inventor of the flash mob. Organized by Pablo Helguera, Director of Adult and Academic Programs, Department of Education, MoMA.

An artist's studio onstage

Robert Smith's review of the play 'Red', about Mark Rothko discusses more than the play, she talks about the relationship between artists, assistants, and critics in the studio. Although it is obvious Smith is not a fan of the play because of the dialogue, she makes it clear that the important part for her is the studio and the silent moments in the play that accurately reflect the interactions she was a part of when she did studio visits. In describing her experience in visiting artists' studios she says:

"And for the most part they were quiet, slow, often awkward experiences, during which I started to learn the relationship between seeing and articulating what I saw, and the basic fact that art takes time."

"An artist made this place called a studio and then used it to make this thing called art that no one knew was missing or needed until it existed."

Art @ Lunch with Jose Roca

Jose Roca - Curator of the exhibition, Philagrafika which is currently on view at more than 80 venues in Philadelphia, is speaking at MICA on Wednesday, April 7 at 12:30 in Main 110. In its first year, Philagrafika is an international festival that celebrates printmaking in contemporary art that will occur annually.
